Understanding Sleep Debt

“I function only on 3-4 hours of sleep daily.” Many of us might have come across people who glamorise sleep deprivation. However, this actually leads to accumulation of a debt that is highly difficult to repay. Sleep debt is understood as the difference between number of hours an individual sleeps for and ideal number of hours required. If it is not compensated for, it gets accumulated over time making it almost impossible to cover up. Lack of adequate sleep has been known to affect both physical and mental health and also increases accident proneness.

Sleep Duration and Health

Short total sleep time (TST < 6 h) is a strong major health determinant that correlates with numerous metabolic, cardiovascular and mental comorbidities, as well as accidents(Leger et al,2020). Leger et al (2020) conducted a research on a large representative sample of 12,367 subjects. Short sleep, sleep debt, and sleep restriction during weekdays affected about one third of adults in our study group. Napping and weekend catch-up sleep only compensated for severe sleep debt in one in four subjects.

Physical and Cognitive Effects

Spiegel et al (1999) found out that sleep debt has a harmful impact on carbohydrate metabolism and endocrine function. Therefore, although the primary function of sleep may be cerebral restoration, sleep debt also has consequences for peripheral function that, if maintained chronically, could have long-term adverse effects on health. Decreased carbohydrate tolerance and increased sympathetic tone are well-recognised risk factors for the development of insulin resistance, obesity, and hypertension. Raised cortisol concentrations in the evening are thought to reflect an impairment of the negative-feedback control of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis and to be involved in age-related insulin resistance and memory impairments. The effects are similar to those seen in normal ageing and, therefore, sleep debt may increase the severity of age-related chronic disorders like diabetes and hypertension. Smith et al (2021) investigated the effects of a chronic sleep restriction protocol over six consecutive weeks in an ICC environment. Subjects were restricted to a 5 h sleep opportunity on weekday nights and an 8 h sleep opportunity on weekend nights. Due to the sleep restriction paradigm, the majority of subjects accumulated a sleep debt relative to their baseline sleep duration. This sleep debt resulted in decreased accuracy across cognitive domains, decreased vigilant attention, and a change in response strategy on a spatial cognition task. However, performance on most tests of the Cognition battery, a computerized battery of ten tests assessing a range of cognitive domains was surprisingly conserved across the 6 weeks of sleep restriction. This can likely be attributed to a combination of testing high-performing individuals at an optimal circadian time with access to caffeine. Chronic sleep loss was also associated with deterioration in subjective happiness and healthiness. Self-reported measures of tiredness and fatigue improved when subjects had access to sleep opportunities of sufficiently long duration. 

Mental Health and Emotional Effects

Omichi et. al. (2026) examined whether fatigue mediates the association between sleep debt and depressive symptoms among municipal employees in Japan. Sleep debt was significantly associated with higher fatigue scores (B = 2.37, p < 0.001), and fatigue was positively associated with depressive symptoms (B = 0.32, p < 0.001). The direct association between sleep debt and depressive symptoms, however, was not statistically significant (B = 0.07, p = 0.36). Saghir (2018) conducted a review and found out that lack of sleep - sleep deprivation and sleep debt - both lead to the emotion of anger. Some hints about the involvement of the limbic system were also found.

Compensating for Sleep Debt

Thus, these findings indicate that sleep and compensating for sleep debt is highly important. Some ways to do it are by maintaining sleep hygiene and exposure to sunlight. Healthy sleep practices can greatly improve sleep quality, for example: eliminate screen time at least one hour before bed, keep your sleeping environment cool, dark, and quiet, avoid stimulants like caffeine after 2–3 p.m., establish a relaxing bedtime routine (e.g., reading, meditation, or stretching). Exposure to natural light within one hour of waking helps align your biological clock with the day-night cycle, enhancing melatonin production at night, which is a very important hormone that ensures healthy sleep and maintains circadian rhythm. Besides this, keeping a regular sleep routine and taking naps can also help to some extent. Thus, sleep goes far beyond making the individual feel well rested and can have a huge impact on physical health and emotions.
